New York Paycheck Calculator
↻ Updated 2026 tax yearSee your real take-home pay in New York for 2026 — after federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare (FICA) and New York state income tax.
How New York taxes your paycheck
New York taxes wages on a progressive schedule from 3.9% up to 10.9% for 2026, applied after the state standard deduction (about $8,000 for a single filer). The calculator above uses that state schedule to estimate your New York State income tax — but it deliberately excludes New York City and Yonkers local income taxes, which are large and separate.
For most salaries your effective New York State rate lands in the 5–6% range, well below the 10.9% top bracket that only applies to multimillion-dollar incomes.
New York City residents pay more — and this calculator doesn't include it
If you live in New York City, you owe city income tax on top of state tax — roughly 3.1% to 3.9% depending on income — withheld right alongside it on your paycheck. Yonkers residents pay a surcharge too. The state figure above does not include either, so a city resident's real deductions are meaningfully higher than the state-tax line shown here.
Where you live, not where you work, drives the city tax: a commuter living outside the five boroughs generally does not owe NYC income tax even when working in Manhattan.
SDI and Paid Family Leave
New York also withholds small amounts for State Disability Insurance and Paid Family Leave. These are minor next to income tax but are additional paycheck deductions the income-tax calculator doesn't model.
Frequently asked questions
What is the New York State income tax rate for 2026?
New York State uses a progressive schedule from 3.9% to 10.9% for 2026. Your effective rate is usually far lower than your top bracket. Note this is the state rate only — New York City adds its own income tax if you live in the city.
Does this include New York City income tax?
No. The calculator estimates New York State income tax only. If you're an NYC resident, add roughly 3.1%–3.9% of taxable income for city tax, withheld on the same paycheck. Yonkers residents pay a separate surcharge.
How much is taken out of my paycheck in New York?
A New York paycheck has federal income tax, FICA (7.65%), New York State income tax, small SDI/Paid Family Leave deductions, and — if you live in NYC or Yonkers — local income tax on top. The calculator covers federal, FICA and state; budget separately for city tax if it applies to you.
