California Paycheck Calculator
↻ Updated 2026 tax yearSee your real take-home pay in California for 2026 — after federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare (FICA) and California state income tax.
How California taxes your paycheck
California taxes wage income on a progressive schedule that runs from 1% to 13.3% — the highest top rate of any state. For 2026 the brackets are indexed for inflation, and the calculator above applies the single-filer schedule after California's standard deduction (about $5,540) to estimate the state income tax withheld from your pay.
The 13.3% figure only bites the very top of very high incomes (the 12.3% top bracket plus a 1% mental-health surcharge on taxable income over $1 million). For a typical salary, your effective California rate is far lower than the headline number, because only the dollars inside each bracket are taxed at that bracket's rate.
SDI: the California deduction this calculator doesn't show
On top of income tax, California withholds State Disability Insurance (SDI) from every paycheck, which funds disability and Paid Family Leave. Since 2024 the wage ceiling has been removed, so SDI applies to your entire salary rather than stopping at a cap — it is roughly 1.2% of gross pay, set each year by the state.
The calculator above models federal income tax, FICA and California income tax, but not SDI — so your real California deductions are a little higher than the state-income-tax line here. Budget for SDI as a separate slice of about 1% of gross.
Why California take-home feels lower
Between a progressive state income tax, SDI on the full salary, and federal tax and FICA, California has one of the larger gaps between gross and net pay in the country. The trade-off is no local wage income tax in most of the state — unlike New York City or many Pennsylvania and Ohio municipalities, a California city generally can't levy its own income tax on your wages.
Frequently asked questions
What is the California income tax rate for 2026?
California uses a progressive schedule from 1% to 13.3% for 2026. Most workers pay a blended effective rate well below their top bracket, because each bracket's rate applies only to the income inside it. Enter your salary above to see the estimated California tax on your specific pay.
How much is taken out of my paycheck in California?
Your California paycheck has four main deductions: federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare (FICA, 7.65%), California state income tax, and State Disability Insurance (about 1.2% of gross, with no wage cap since 2024). The calculator estimates the first three; add roughly 1% for SDI.
Does California have local income taxes?
Generally no — unlike New York City, California cities do not levy a separate income tax on wages, so your state income tax is the only state-level income tax you pay. San Francisco's payroll tax falls on employers, not on your paycheck.
